For those performing the rituals at home, the basic preparations include a clean puja space, a wooden chowki or platform covered with a fresh red or yellow cloth, and a Ganesh idol, preferably made of clay. Other commonly used puja items include roli, haldi, kumkum, akshat, durva grass, flowers, a garland, coconut, fruits, modak or laddoo, betel leaves, betel nuts and Janeu. Panchamrit can be made with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, while a diya, incense sticks, camphor and dakshina are kept ready.
Ganpati Sthapana starts with Deep Prajwalan and Sankalpa and then Avahana, in which devotees call Lord Ganesha to their homes. The idol is then placed on the prepared chowki and worshipped with the traditional offerings. Devotees may offer flowers, Durva grass, akshat, coconut, fruits and sweets, especially modak and laddoo. The puja can be accompanied by the chanting of “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”, followed by Ganesh Aarti.
With the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities ongoing, devotees across various cities will be taking part in morning and evening aartis, touring the adorned pandals, sharing festive greetings and offering prayers to Ganpati Bappa. At home, daily worship continues for the chosen duration, which may be one and a half days, three, five or seven days, or until Anant Chaturdashi. The festival will culminate in Ganesh Visarjan on September 25, 2026.
