NEW DELHI: India’s wait for a gold medal continued on Day 2 of the Asian Games 2026, but four more podium finishes lifted the country’s tally to six as shooting once again led the charge in Aichi-Nagoya. India added three medals from the range and a historic bronze in mixed martial arts to move to four silver and two bronze medals overall.India were placed 12th in the medal standings at the end of the day’s action, while China continued to set the pace at the top of the table. Japan and South Korea remained in the leading pack as the early medal race began to take shape.
Shooting delivers three more medals
The shooting range once again proved to be India’s most productive venue. Himanshu Dhillon and Rudrankksh Patil secured silver and bronze respectively in the men’s 10m air rifle individual event, while the duo combined with Parth Mane to win the team silver.Dhillon held his nerve to finish second behind China’s Olympic champion Sheng Lihao, who successfully defended his Asian Games title with 254.2 points. Patil took bronze with 230.9. Suchika makes MMA history amid heartbreak
The fourth Indian medal of the day came from Suchika Tariyal, who created history by becoming India’s first Asian Games medallist in mixed martial arts. But the bronze came with a painful twist.Suchika’s semifinal against Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo ended in a draw, but the Indian was around 700 grams heavier at the morning weigh-in. Under the competition rules, the lighter athlete advances when a bout is tied, sending Teo into the final and leaving Suchika with the bronze.
China strengthen grip on medal table
China’s dominance was reflected across several venues. In swimming, 13-year-old Yu Zidi won her second gold medal in as many days, setting an Asian Games record in the women’s 200m individual medley.China also won gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke through Dong Zhihao, while Qin Haiyang took bronze. The results added to China’s growing haul – 38 medals including 23 gold, as the continental powerhouse continued to establish a substantial lead over Japan (32 medals) and South Korea (23 medals).For India, the six-medal tally provides a solid start, but the absence of a gold remains the most notable feature of the early standings. With several medal events still to come, the focus now shifts to whether India can convert its strong run of silver finishes into gold as the Games progress.
