Vidyut Jammwal has revealed that being typecast as an action star was always part of his plan, rather than a limitation he wanted to overcome. In an exclusive conversation with Mid-Day, the actor spoke about embracing his action-hero image in Bollywood, explaining why he wanted audiences to associate him with high-octane action. He also discussed preparing for his Hollywood debut in ‘Street Fighter’, in which he plays Dhalsim, a skilled yoga practitioner from the popular video game franchise.
Vidyut Jammwal says he always wanted to be typecast as an action star
Vidyut made his Bollywood debut with the 2011 film ‘Force’, starring John Abraham and Genelia D’Souza, in which he played the antagonist Vishnu. He subsequently established himself as an action star with films such as the ‘Commando’ franchise, ‘Khuda Haafiz’ and ‘IB71’. His martial arts skills, physical agility and intense screen presence have become defining features of his performances. While actors often express concerns about being restricted to a particular genre, Vidyut said he consciously wanted to build a distinct identity around action. For him, being recognised for his skills was a goal he had set for himself early in his career.“I wanted to be typecast. I wanted everybody to say Vidyut does action. I have finally achieved the typecast, and I love it. I wanted to be known for what I do. I wanted to be put in this box that Vidyut can do it and he does action, and he does it so well that there will be a day Street Fighter will call him and make him a part of it, so yes,” he told the afore mentioned publication.
Vidyut Jammwal reveals how he prepared for ‘Street Fighter’
Vidyut is set to make his Hollywood debut with ‘Street Fighter’, an action-adventure film based on the popular video game franchise. He plays Dhalsim, a character known for his yoga practice and distinctive fighting style.Discussing his preparation for the role, Vidyut explained that his homework extended beyond physical training. He focused on understanding the other characters in the film and studying how they fought, which helped him prepare for the dynamics between them.“Not the physical preparation, but I had to understand all the other characters that were in the movie. Every character that Dhalsim has fought, I need to see how they fight with each other. So, that was the homework I had done a lot, which really helped me because I got to know every character,” he said.
