IPL: CSK bring Livingstone in from SRH, let Khaleel go
Khaleel Ahmed, Liam Livingstone

CHENNAI: With the November 17 deadline approaching for franchises to submit their retained and released players lists, Chennai Super Kings have made a significant move in the trade window, sending fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards. While Livingstone, who was bought by SRH for Rs 13 crore at the previous auction, will join CSK for a reduced fee of Rs 6 crore, Australian allrounder Edwards will come at his existing price of Rs 3 crore. SRH had acquired Khaleel for Rs 4.8 crore and Ellis for Rs 2 crore. The trades raise questions about CSK’s decision to part ways with two quality pacers, particularly Khaleel, who had a decent stint with the franchise in 2025 before a quadriceps injury cut short his IPL 2026 campaign. Ellis, meanwhile, missed the entire season with a hamstring injury. On whether injuries influenced the decision to trade the two quicks, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the move was driven by the franchise’s cricket management. “The cricket management takes all decisions at CSK. We have the think tank of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Zaheer Khan and MS Dhoni. They have assessed what is best for CSK and taken the decision accordingly,” Viswanathan told TOI.For CSK, Livingstone’s arrival brings considerable T20 experience. He has scored 8,595 runs and taken 171 wickets in 370 T20 matches. However, after winning the IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025, he featured in just two matches for SRH in the subsequent season. CSK may also have factored in Livingstone’s past match-winning performances, despite the allrounder currently struggling to find a place in the England side. “He hardly got enough opportunities last year. They would have considered that as well as everything else before taking the call,” he said. The trade also appears to benefit SRH, who have strengthened their pace attack by bringing the two pacers. Khaleel has also represented SRH earlier.

Do you think CSK made the right decision to trade Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis?
