Pakistan were bowled out for just 133 in 33.5 overs. Josh Tongue spearheaded England’s attack with 4/42, while Ollie Robinson claimed 3/15 to reach his 100th Test wicket and Jofra Archer added 3/25. Saud Shakeel’s 43 was the only substantial resistance from Pakistan.
England then made the most of the favourable batting conditions, with debutant Emilio Gay scoring a composed 60. Joe Root was dismissed for just eight by Pakistan debutant Razaullah, who impressed with his raw pace and finished the day with 2/42. Harry Brook, however, remained unbeaten on 52, with Dan Lawrence on 5.
Brook holds the key
England’s immediate objective will be to extend their lead rapidly on the second morning. Brook’s attacking approach could put Pakistan under enormous pressure if he carries on from his unbeaten half-century.
A lead approaching 150-200 runs would leave Pakistan facing a daunting task on a pitch that offered considerable assistance to the seamers on Day 1.
Razaullah Pakistan’s big hope
Pakistan’s biggest positive from the opening day was the performance of 21-year-old debutant Razaullah. His pace, which touched 90 mph, troubled England’s batters and earned him the prized wicket of Root.
Pakistan will need him, along with Mohammad Abbas and the rest of the attack, to strike early and prevent England from building an overwhelming advantage.
