Actor Nani recently spoke about his approach to choosing films, working with debutant directors and exploring different roles. The actor and filmmaker known for his critical hits like ‘Jersey’ and ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ as well making way towards commercial success with films ‘Nenu Local’, ‘Saripodhaa Sanivaaram’ and more shared that he does not plan his career by balancing commercial action films with emotional dramas. Instead, he follows his instincts and chooses stories that excite him. While speaking with Variety India, Nani who is currently looking forward to his next projects, including ‘Bloody Romeo’, which follows ‘The Paradise’ shared he knows he will eventually get tired of doing action films and will want to work on something simple and heartwarming.

Nani on choosing films based on his instinct

Nani said he does not choose films by keeping their box office results in mind. He explained that making a film takes several months, so he wants to enjoy the experience.“I’m just going with my instinct. When we work on a film, we are focused on it for the next six to nine months or maybe even a year. So, I want to be excited about it. I don’t want to calculate and work on any film keeping the Friday results in mind. I want to enjoy the process first. And I genuinely believe if I enjoy the process, the results will come along,” he said.

Nani on working with debutant directors

Nani has worked with several first-time directors, including Nag Ashwin in ‘Yevade Subramanyam’, Shouryuv in ‘Hi Nanna’ and Srikanth Odela in ‘Dasara’.Speaking about what he looks for when a debutant approaches him with a story, Nani said passion matters more to him than experience.“I try to see if the boy is passionate. Is there really a love for cinema? Is he wanting to make a film because it’s a cool thing to be a director? Or is he very passionate about wanting to tell a story? That’s the first thing I look for,” he said.He added that a passionate filmmaker can learn and overcome a lack of experience if the person is honest and genuinely wants to make a good film.

Nani on Malayalam films and his dream role

Nani also spoke about the possibility of acting in a full-length Malayalam film or a Hindi film that requires him to dub for himself. He said he is comfortable with Hindi and has already acted in and dubbed for Tamil films such as ‘Veppam’ and ‘Aaha Kalyanam’.However, he admitted that speaking Tamil on stage can make him nervous, even though he can learn the dialogues and get the accent and slang right while dubbing.Nani also revealed that he has always wanted to be part of a film like ‘Gladiator’, describing it as a childhood dream. He also mentioned ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ as another film that left an impression on him. However, the actor said he is satisfied with having his own memorable film in ‘Jersey’.“But I think I have my own ‘Jersey,’ so I am fine,” he said.

Nani on his directing a project

The actor addressed the possibility of becoming a full-time director. Although he once thought he might direct a film someday, he said he is currently enjoying acting too much to make that move.“I’m having too much fun being an actor. So, I’m not really looking at it, but one should never say never,” he said.Nani will be next seen in the action drama ‘Bloody Romeo’ with ‘They Call Him OG’ fame Sujeeth.
