The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed an introductory module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12, aiming to familiarise them with emerging technologies, problem-solving methods and the responsible use of digital tools.Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI. It uses activity-based learning to introduce fundamental concepts, explain real-world applications and limitations of artificial intelligence, and build awareness of data privacy and ethical technology use.NCERT said the module introduces computational thinking as a systematic approach to solving problems while helping students understand how AI functions, where it can be applied and what its limitations are.
NCERT’s AI module focuses on activity-based learning
The module follows an experiential learning approach, with activities involving discussions, practical exercises, experimentation, and reflection. The approach is intended to help students understand concepts through participation rather than relying solely on theoretical instruction. The activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools with different levels of technological infrastructure to use the material. This approach also enables students to engage with computational thinking and AI concepts without requiring access to specialised equipment. The module aims to strengthen critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills while introducing learners to the possibilities and constraints of AI-based technologies.
Data privacy, misinformation and ethical AI use among key focus areas
Responsible technology use is a central component of the module. Students are also encouraged to verify information generated by AI systems critically rather than accepting automated responses without scrutiny. The focus is intended to help learners recognise the risks associated with AI-generated content and develop a more informed approach to using digital tools. The module also addresses the importance of fairness and ethical responsibility in the use of technology, encouraging students to consider the consequences of how AI systems are developed and applied.
Human judgement remains central to AI education
NCERT has emphasised that introducing students to AI should not come at the cost of independent thinking and human decision-making. The module seeks to help students become informed, confident and responsible users of technology while reinforcing the role of human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility. The initiative is aligned with the broader educational emphasis under NEP 2020 on developing critical thinking, problem-solving and skills relevant to changing technological needs.By introducing computational thinking and artificial intelligence at the secondary and senior secondary levels, the module seeks to give students a foundation for understanding emerging technologies and evaluating their applications responsibly.
