US President Donald Trump’s public approval rating rose by one percentage point to 32 per cent, a slight recovery from last week’s record low, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Monday.Trump’s Republican Party is fighting to keep control of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections. In the five-day nationwide poll, registered voters preferred Democrats to Republicans by 47 per cent to 36 per cent when asked which party they would back for Congress. This 11-point gap was one percentage point smaller than in the previous Reuters/Ipsos poll, which closed on October 19.When undecided voters were asked which party they were leaning towards, the Democratic lead shrank further to nine percentage points, with 50 per cent favouring Democrats and 41 per cent Republicans.Republicans currently hold majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Losing control of either chamber could complicate Trump’s agenda during the last two years of his second term, Reuters reported. The poll also pointed to a change in voters’ views on economic management. Reuters/Ipsos surveys beforethe war had shown voters preferring Republicans over Democrats on the economy. In the latest poll, 37 per cent of voters said Democrats had a better approach to the economy, against 33 per cent who favoured Republicans.Democratic voters also reported more enthusiasm about the midterms. About 46 per cent of Democrats said they were very enthusiastic about voting, compared with 30 per cent of Republicans.Generic ballot polls show which party voters would prefer to control Congress nationwide. However, they do not show how individual states and constituencies are likely to vote, which ultimately determines control of the House and Senate. Republicans have some structural advantages in these local contests, Reuters reported. The online Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,679 US adults, including 1,280 registered voters. The margin of error was two percentage points for all adults and three percentage points for registered voters.
