Imagine accumulating a net worth of around Rs 2 crore before you turn 30 years of age. What should your next course of action be?A 28-year-old woman has claimed on Reddit that she has a net worth of around Rs 2 crore, earns about Rs 4 lakh a month and has no EMIs to pay. According to her Reddit post, her husband earns another Rs 3 lakh a month and has a net worth of around Rs 1.5 crore. Yet the couple is wondering whether they can afford to live on a single income.
Networth in crores
The woman, who identified herself as a senior software engineer, shared her financial details on the personal finance forum in February this year. She claimed that her investments include Rs 75 lakh in mutual funds, Rs 35 lakh in gold, Rs 35 lakh in company stocks, Rs 20 lakh in fixed deposits, Rs 13 lakh in EPF and Rs 10 lakh in NPS. She has another Rs 7 lakh lent to others, Rs 4 lakh in savings accounts and Rs 1 lakh in Sovereign Gold Bonds and RBI Bonds. Her husband earns close to Rs 3 lakh a month, while she says her take-home income, including company stocks, is around Rs 4 lakh a month. The couple currently has no EMIs and estimates their monthly expenses at between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. The couple does not have children yet but plans to have one in the next year or two. The woman said both of them are finding it stressful to manage work and the household at the same time. She enjoys managing the household and is therefore considering leaving her job and shifting to a single-income household supported by her husband’s salary.“Are we in good shape to shift to single income household from my husband’s salary and I am planning to manage the household since we are finding it stressful to manage both work and house. I like managing the household,” she says in her post. She also said they want to be prepared for major uncertainties, including the possibility of AI affecting jobs. While she felt that quitting looked possible in an optimistic scenario, she was unsure about how the decision would work out under a more pessimistic scenario.“We want to be well prepared in case of major events like AI taking over jobs or other uncertain events. While in an optimistic scenario it looks like I can quit my office job, but not sure of a pessimistic scenario. What do you think?,” she posted inviting opinion.
How she built the networth
A user on Reddit asked the woman how she managed to build such a networth. Her explanation of how she built the Rs 2 crore corpus was fairly straightforward. She said she had been careful with spending from the beginning, started SIPs as soon as she received her first salary and invested consistently. She said she never had expensive habits or much interest in spending. The Covid period also played a role in how much she was able to save. She spent three years in her hometown during the period, which she said kept her expenses very low.As a result, most of her income went into savings. She also said she started her career outside the large technology companies, switched jobs every two to three years and benefited from the strong compensation available during the Covid period.
People respond to the post
The post triggered a divided response. Some Reddit users questioned why someone with a Rs 2 crore net worth and a Rs 4 lakh monthly income needed advice on whether she could manage financially. Others took the question more seriously and suggested that she should consider the loss of income before leaving a well-paying career.Several commenters suggested a middle path instead of quitting altogether. One recommended moving to a less stressful job even if it meant accepting a lower salary. Others suggested hiring domestic help and making the existing job easier to manage. The woman explained that the problem was not simply poor work-life balance. She wanted enough time to cook her own food, rest, pursue fitness and health, and have some leisure time. With both partners working, she said their days had become a constant rush between work, commuting and household responsibilities.(Disclaimer: The Times of India could not independently verify the claims of the Reddit user.
